Time does flies. Once day you wake up and you realized the days are long and the years are short. I have known my friend, Nancy, for over 25 years. We met in college as she was traveling around the world and I was a shy girl from NYC. I would look up to Nancy and thought to myself how I wished I could be like her. Nancy was so free and always with a big smile on her face. She was articulate, smart and so free (I was not comfortable in my own skin). After college, Nancy ventured to China and lived there for almost 20 years before returning to the United States. I joked with her that she probably knows more about the Chinese culture than I did as I came to the United States when I was 5 years old. Today I have two young kids and Nancy continues to impact my life in big ways with her kindness as shown by her letter and Christmas gifts to my family. Her kindness shines through with her big smile. Her letter brought tears to my eyes as I feel so honored and grateful to have a friend like Nancy.
Below is the letter Nancy included with all of her throughtful wrapped up gifts for all of us.
Dear Chloe and Matthew:
Hello to both of your! I am just sending you little something for Christmas (although it will absolutely be there later, sorry about that!). I didn’t write anything in the books in case you already have them, so you could exchange them for something else if you wanted, but here is the explanation:
Chloe, the book We Are Water Protectors is for you. You might know that I grew up on Long Island, not too far from where you are now, but In Arizona, where I live now, there is a lot of Native American influence. In the story, the little girl’s job is to protect the earth, and there ‘s a sentence in there, about the water having memory, that your mother likes to say!
Matthew, you might already have this book, The Boys, The Mole, and The Fox and The Horse, but I have thought I would try anyway — this is a wonderful story about friendship, but it’s beautifully written and drawn, and I thought of you, as an artist, might appreciate the work.
Matthew and Chloe, the book Where the Sidewalk Ends and Everything On It are for you to shares. There are really popular books fo children’s poetry that have been around forever. Where the Sidewalk Ends was one of my favorite when I was younger, so I thought you might like it.
Any the polymer clay is something you might want to do on days where you’re such inside. An the book A Woman’s Book of Inspiration is for your mom, so make sure she gets it. Tell her there are gift receipts for four of these items.
I hope you both have a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year! Thanks for all the photos and videos you keep sending me!
Thank you, Nancy, for all that you do for my family. As we are reaching our young old age of fifty, I am so grateful that we remained friends since college!
